I've actually forgotten how sheltered I've been.
No violence, no pain, no family issues, no friends gone bad, no money problems - people like me have never really seen that side of life, never felt that kind of suffering. Yet, we are too absorbed in self-pity and misery to realise just how lucky we are to not have to go through all that.
Of course, it's never as simple as it looks. We may be better off in terms of material things, but it is the immaterial that truly matter. Who can see what kind of problems these perfect families face? Heated arguments, cool disdain, parents rejected, children ignored, disregard for everyone else; all kept locked up inside, afraid to show the world.
What life is this, if you aren't allowed to enjoy the simple pleasures, to never be able to feel the joy of spending time with a loved one, nor understand the value of a handmade gift? To receive that love and appreciation in return is payment enough.
It's little gestures like these which are missing in our lives, but all we can do is wait and hope for someone to put that spark back in us. It just takes too much to let ourselves hope, only to be disappointed once again.
will you be my knight in shining armour?
